Mt. Adams Real Estate
Located just two miles east of downtown Cincinnati and perched high atop a hill, this charming neighborhood is known for its romantic sights and its active nightlife. While only about 1,500 residents live in Mt. Adams, there are more than a dozen eateries, a satisfying selection of bars, and a lot to see and do in this neighborhood. Pedestrian- and pet-friendly, visitors to the area will find picturesque views and winding streets.
History abounds here, as during the 1800s, land owner and grape enthusiast Nicholas Longworth began cultivating grapes on the hill, and it was here that his granddaughter, Maria Longworth, founded Rookwood Pottery, makers of the collected and highly sought-after ceramics. Mr. Longworth donated a portion of his land to the city’s observatory (now located in the neighborhood of Mt. Lookout) to drum up interest in the area. In fact, Mt. Adams was named after president John Quincy Adams, who gave his dedication address to the observatory there in the 1840s. Rookwood Pottery’s original location is now a restaurant. Longworth’s Bar and Restaurant and the four-star Celestial steakhouse, honor the influential family.
During the late nineteenth century, Mt. Adams was a working class neighborhood, made accessible thanks to an incline system, and later the stomping ground of some of the city’s artists, due in part to affordable cost of living and to the location of the Art Academy of Cincinnati (currently located downtown). During the late-20th century, the neighborhood became increasingly more affluent, and is now home to some of the most exciting real estate in the city.
Within walking distance of Mt. Adams is the scenic Eden Park, Krohn Conservatory, Playhouse In The Park theatre, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. Residents and visitors flock to see some of the annual events in Mt. Adams, including the Good Friday stairway climb, in which Catholic followers climb the long stairway to the Holy Immaculata Church (and take in its breathtaking view); the festive and funny Reindog Parade (in which pet owners march alongside their outfitted pooches); and the mid-December Luminaria, in which residents stroll at nightfall along streets lined with glowing luminaries. Not to be forgotten, this neighborhood on the hill offers the perfect vantage point for watching the annual Labor Day fireworks.
