Located in the Southwestern portion of the state, Cincinnati, Ohio is historically and culturally unique. With a population of more than 300,000 it has all the charm of a small town, but the accessibility of a larger city. It has been called the southern-most northern city, and the northern-most southern city.
Cincinnati was settled in 1788 by John Cleves Symmes, father-in-law of president William Henry Harrison. The city has been known by several monikers: Losantiville, The Queen City and Cincy, among others. In the 19th century, Cincinnati saw the influx of German immigrants to the area, whose imprint remains in the city's street names and areas such as Over-The-Rhine, German surnames its large annual Oktoberfest celebration.
